My name is Stewart Browne and I own and operate Avocargo. Since 2018 we have been importing, ripening and supplying the finest Mexican avocados to restaurants and hotels in London.
After living in Mexico for many years, I returned home in 2014, and quickly became aware of the poor quality of avocados available to the UK market. Due to the volcanic soil, the perfect micro-climate and higher oil content of Mexican avocados, the taste and texture are far superior, and in the UK I was unable to find avocados that were consistently of the quality I had become accustomed to. That simple fact drove me to build a business importing Mexican avocados into the UK
Underlying my ability to do this was the personal relationships that I had formed with avocado farmers during the decade I spent in the country. In that time I saw the good, and the bad, that a Michoacan based avocado producer has to deal with, and the mutual benefit of the success of Avocargo cemented a close and collaborative working relationship.
We, and the growers, constantly refine the process of picking and ripening the fruit but we also recognise the value of complete traceability and certification.
As a consequence, many of our ranches and packing houses are now fully certified by Global Gap, one of the world’s leading quality authorities. In addition, we work closely with Control Union, a widely respected company who ensure quality control and best practises, from field to packing house to final destination. This means that we can trace all payments around our fruits, from seed, to fruit, to picking, packing, shipping and to delivery to our customers in the UK.
With that said, still the most certain way to ensure our business and products are the most ethically sourced is that I only buy from my trusted friends in Michoacan and Jalisco, all of whom I have known for many years, and are very well respected in the industry.
